Going Home

What to Expect

So the day has finally arrived time has come to welcome your new family member.

You’ve created an enclosed area giving your little one enough room to walk, play, eat and potty so as to feel secure while acclimating to their new environment.

In your puppy bag there is a new bag of food, some toys and chews so you don’t have to worry about changing diet.

In the folder along with papers, birth certificate and vet records is a puppy training schedule assuring everyone gets off on the right foot. The schedule details out how many hours to crate, when to take outside and establish a playtime. Routine is important the first few weeks.

Bringing your puppy home it is important to hold, caress and comfort them, establishing a bond that you are a safe space. Do not let them hide and if they do immediately locate and hold them. You want them to begin to relate your scent with home. It’s important to note that puppies see more with their noses than they do with their eyes so establishing that bond early is critical.

Avoid treats for the first few days. We want them to establish a pattern of eating in their new home and that should be dog food. Treats are an award.

The day your baby came home he/she was bathed, ears cleaned, nails and hair trimmed so bathing your baby again is not advisable as it dries their skin out. Special care needs to be taken when bathing that water doesn’t get in their ears developing a yeast infection. I do my best but occasionally I will have a puppy get a yeast infection presenting itself with a discharge and sour smell. This can treated at home with 50/50 vinegar water, irrigating the ears with an oral syringe and gently cleaning with a Qtip.

Your puppy goes home screened for over 200 hereditary, genetic related diseases by an independent lab. Has been exposed to the ENS program. Puppy is healthy!

As in life things will pop up and that’s why I offer lifetime support. Many things can be taken care of more safely at home then at the vets office so never be afraid to call. I am here to help and answer questions.

It’s been a full day and it’s night-night time. Nighttime can be extremely stressful for your new puppy leaving Mom and siblings and for the first time experiencing being alone. You have imprinted your scent, puppy is crated for the night and the house is quiet. The best way to assure a peaceful night for all and avoid crying all thru the night place a piece of your soiled clothing (I like a dirty sock) in the crate with puppy. The scent assures they’re not alone and they should sleep peacefully.

It’s been a beautiful day, you’re in love and your little one is rapidly becoming your world and yours theirs. A lifelong journey has begun and your life just got fuller for there is no greater love than that of a dog for it’s human! Enjoy the journey and don’t forget send grandma a pic and update once in awhile. I love to see them grow!
